We are experts in dead animal removal, and take our job seriously. When removing dead animals, we do a COMPLETE job — not only do we remove the dead animal from your home or yard, we also decontaminate the area, deodorize it, and dispose of the animal or cremate it. If you aren't sure whether the stench in your house is due to a rotting carcass or another reason, we can sniff it out with our noses from our years of experience. We remove dead raccoons, dead opossums, dead skunks, dead squirrels, dead birds, even dead dogs and cats. We frequently remove dead rodents from inside walls, because poison kills rats and mice, who die in your house. We completely solve your dead animal problem by taking these steps:

  • Sniff out the dead animal if it is somewhere in your home
  • When necessary, for example if the animal is in a wall or under your house, cut a hole to remove the animal
  • Remove the dead animal, safely and completely (and seal the hole if needed)
  • Finish the job by decontaminating and deodorizing your home
  • Properly dispose of the dead animal through incineration or other means
  • Prevent it from happening again by finding out how they got in your house

Dead animal carcass removal is specialty work. Sometimes the job is simple, such as a dead opossum in the yard, in which case we can simply wear our gloves and respirator mask, bag the carcass, and take it away for incineration. Sometimes this is more complex, such as when the dead animal is under a home crawlspace, under a porch or deck or shed. Or if the animal is larger, such as a dog or a deer. The most complex cases are dead animals inside the house. The animal may have died inside the attic, or down in the walls, or the duct work, or any other part of the architecture. You may have a bad smell in your home, and you're not even sure what's causing it. We've removed not just dead animals, but rotting food, bad mold, etc. We specialize in locating the source of the smell, and we very commonly cut a hole in the ceiling or wall to remove the animal. We remove every bit of the carcass, mop up the juices, vacuum the maggots, spray it and wipe it down with disinfectant, cleaner, and we repair the hole we cut. In some cases we use ozone machines to neutralize odor.

Kalamazoo Dead Animal Tip: How Long Does It Take for Dead Animal Odor to Go Away?

A homeowner’s nightmare has happened: you’ve found a dead animal in your house. Whether you’ve managed to remove the carcass, or you’ve been forced to leave it in place, there’s one question on your mind: how long will the smell last? Rotting flesh is amongst the most awful smells around. It’s the smell of death. Unlike rotting food, it has a scent that’s difficult to describe. A noxious and nauseating mix of sulfur dioxide, methane, benzene derivatives, and various long-chain hydrocarbons. That’s all very science-y, but in practice, the effects are eye-watering.

How long will the dead animal smell last?

Carcass still present
In short: the smell will last until the animal has completely decomposed. Therefore, if you’ve been forced to leave the carcass in place, you won’t be rid of the smell, at least until the entire animal is gone. The smell is also dependent on the surrounding location. A rat that’s died in an air conditioning unit or by a steam pipe will be much more intense than a mouse in the attic. And, of course, the more animals that have died, the greater the smell. A single mouse is unlikely to attract much attention. A dozen will cause a stench throughout your house.

As an estimate, a dead rat odor may be extremely pungent for a week. Then, begin to fade for weeks afterward. Larger animals will, naturally, cause a longer-lasting odor. The obvious solution is to remove the animal. However, that’s not always possible. In that case, try to seal up the area around the dead animal – preventing access to flies and other pests. Then, use deodorizers to reduce the smell: vinegar, baking powder solution, cat litter, charcoal briquettes. Hopefully, they will significantly reduce the smell.

The carcass has been removed
If the animal has been removed, then the process of smell dissipation has already begun. Remember to scrub and clean the surrounding area thoroughly. The less tissue is left behind, the fewer sources of the smell exist. If a piece of insulation is affected, throw it out and replace it. The same is true for any other contaminated items. Use enzyme cleaners and potent disinfectants. You can also lay deodorizers around the affected area to soak up any smell that does still waft through your house. Don’t simply mask the odor with pleasant fragrances. They won’t reduce the smell. Opening windows and ensuring the house is well-ventilated will help draw the odors out. You can also add in fans to speed up the process. Air filtration systems are worthy of consideration if you have one to hand or find the smell isn’t fading fast enough. When taken together, such measures will significantly reduce the time the odor takes to dissipate. Expect the odor to fade over a few weeks.

Finding the source of a dead animal smell
If you’ve recently discovered a smell and you’re struggling to find the source, follow these tips:

Use the strength of the smell as a guide. The more pungent the smell, the closer you are to the source. Consider all possible locations, including air conditioning ducts, inside walls, in crawl spaces, or attics. Look for damp spots or stains on the walls or ceiling. These are indicators that an animal has died nearby.

If you own a dog, they have a remarkable sense of smell. Try to get them to locate the source of the smell. Maggots and other insects are a clear sign of a decomposing body. If you notice blowflies and other flying insects, once again, look for where the numbers are highest. You may even be able to hear buzzing inside the walls.

To recap
If a carcass is still present and non-removable, inject disinfect and a deodorizer into the surrounding area. Seal up the entire location to prevent pests from gaining access. The smell lingering time is dependent on the size of the animal, the number of animals, and adjacent structures. Expect the smell of one rat to last at least a month. If you have removed the carcass, thoroughly clean the area and spread deodorizers around the site. The smell will gradually fade over a few weeks.
