A homeowner’s nightmare has happened: you’ve found a dead animal in your house. Whether you’ve managed to remove the carcass, or you’ve been forced to leave it in place, there’s one question on your mind: how long will the smell last? Rotting flesh is amongst the most awful smells around. It’s the smell of death. Unlike rotting food, it has a scent that’s difficult to describe. A noxious and nauseating mix of sulfur dioxide, methane, benzene derivatives, and various long-chain hydrocarbons. That’s all very science-y, but in practice, the effects are eye-watering.

How long will the dead animal smell last?

In short: the smell will last until the animal has completely decomposed. Therefore, if you’ve been forced to leave the carcass in place, you won’t be rid of the smell, at least until the entire animal is gone. The smell is also dependent on the surrounding location. A rat that’s died in an air conditioning unit or by a steam pipe will be much more intense than a mouse in the attic. And, of course, the more animals that have died, the greater the smell. A single mouse is unlikely to attract much attention. A dozen will cause a stench throughout your house.

As an estimate, a dead rat odor may be extremely pungent for a week. Then, begin to fade for weeks afterward. Larger animals will, naturally, cause a longer-lasting odor. The obvious solution is to remove the animal. However, that’s not always possible. In that case, try to seal up the area around the dead animal – preventing access to flies and other pests. Then, use deodorizers to reduce the smell: vinegar, baking powder solution, cat litter, charcoal briquettes. Hopefully, they will significantly reduce the smell.

If the animal has been removed, then the process of smell dissipation has already begun. Remember to scrub and clean the surrounding area thoroughly.
